5 Ways to Make Your Home’s Spaces Work Double Duty
We ask a lot of our homes.
At Style and Space Interiors, we believe a room can be beautiful without having just one purpose. A guest room may need to function as an office most of the year. A family room needs somewhere to hide toys. A dining area might host Thanksgiving one night and mahjong the next.
Here are five of our favorite ways to make your home work a little harder without sacrificing style.
Fall Trayscaping Essentials
There is something about fall that makes us want to gather things closer. A tray is the perfect place to do it. Here’s a simple formula for creating a warm, layered moment that feels collected, useful, and unmistakably autumnal.
October Favorite Finds
October is probably my favorite month for nesting. The leaves are changing, the light gets softer, and suddenly I want everything to feel a little warmer, cozier, and more layered. Here’s what I’m loving this month as we settle into fall.
Choosing Ceiling Fans Without Compromising Your Design
I was recently quoted in House Beautiful for their piece, "Your Old Ceiling Fan Could Be Cheapening Your Space—Here's How Experts Choose the Right Design," about ceiling fan size, and I have more tips to share in this blog post.
Why Craftsmanship Is Becoming the New Luxury in Interior Design
For the past several years, so much of the conversation around interiors has centered on what a room looks like. The perfect photograph, the recognizable piece of furniture, the color of the moment.
But lately, I'm seeing the conversation shift.
Clients are increasingly interested in how something is made, why it was selected, and what makes a space feel distinctive.
Designing a Southampton Home Where Every Room Has a Story
Some projects are about restraint. Others give you permission to layer, customize, embellish, and have a little fun.
This Southampton home was the latter.
September Favorite Finds
September always feels like the start of something new. The light begins to shift, the air gets a little crisper, and I find myself reaching for warmer colors, cozy layers, and pieces that make home feel just a little more inviting. Here’s what’s been catching my eye as we ease into fall.
Designing a Southampton Summer Home for Real Life
There is something special about designing a summer house. It should feel different from your everyday home. A little lighter, a little more playful, and perhaps a little less precious. Most importantly, it should make you feel like you've arrived at summer the moment you walk through the door.
That was our goal for this Southampton home, designed for a young family with two daughters who live in New York City during the school year and spend their summers out East.
From Vision to Installation: What Construction Looks Like Behind the Scenes
One of the things I love most about interior design is seeing an idea that started as a conversation or sketch become something completely tangible.
Right now, we have projects at almost every stage of that process. The beautiful finished photographs are the end result, but there is so much thought, coordination, problem-solving, and excitement that happens before we ever get there.
A Timeless Boys’ Bedroom That Will Grow With Him
Children's bedrooms have a way of evolving almost as quickly as the children themselves. One year it's dinosaurs, the next it's sports, then teenagers arrive with entirely different ideas. That's why we love designing kids' rooms with a timeless foundation that can adapt as their personalities grow.
A Laundry Room That Proves Beautiful Design Belongs Everywhere
Some of the most memorable rooms in a home aren't always the largest or the most formal. Sometimes they're the spaces we use every day - the rooms that functionally support our routines.
This laundry room in Tarrytown, NY is a perfect example.
August Favorite Finds
August always has a way of slowing me down just enough to notice the little things I've been loving, in the studio, around the house, and honestly, in my own closet and jewelry box too. Here's what's been catching my eye this month.
Designing With Whimsy: A Briarcliff Manor Kitchen and the Power of an Unexpected Pop of Color
There is a moment in every project where you have to decide whether to play it safe or take a risk. In this Briarcliff Manor kitchen, that moment came down to two oversized pendant lights and one bold question. Could pink actually work here?
Designing a Living Room Around Real Life: Southampton Project
This project in Southampton is exactly the kind of home I love most. A family with young kids who are in and out of the swimming pool all summer long, sandy feet on the floors, wet bathing suits, weekend guests piling in for long lazy afternoons. This home needed to be beautiful and it needed to be real. Those two things are not mutually exclusive, and this project is proof.
How I Design a Mahjong Room
Mahjong rooms have become one of my favorite spaces to design. It is not just about creating a pretty room, it is about creating a room that feels just as good on a quiet Tuesday afternoon as it does mid game with snacks out and tiles clicking.
July Favorites: Celebrating 250 Years of American Style
This Fourth of July feels especially meaningful as we celebrate America's 250th anniversary. It's a time to gather with family and friends, honor tradition, and create memories at home.
This month's favorites are inspired by classic American hospitality, timeless design, and the simple joys of summer entertaining.
A Kitchen Renovation in Briarcliff Manor That Changed Everything
Some kitchens just need a refresh. And some kitchens need to be completely rethought from the ground up.
This one in Briarcliff Manor, NY was the latter.
From Builder-Grade to Beautifully Personal: A Townhouse Transformation at Edge on Hudson
When this family came to us, they had just moved into a brand new townhouse at Edge on Hudson in Sleepy Hollow, New York. The development is beautiful, the location is spectacular, and the bones were solid. But like most newly built homes, it looked exactly like every other unit in the development. Builder-grade finishes. Predictable fixtures. No personality.
That is where we came in.
The Art of Pairing Wainscoting and Wallpaper: How I Design From the Wall Up
One of the questions I get asked most often is how I decide on wainscoting height and wallpaper patterns, and how I know when they work together. The honest answer is that I rarely decide at my desk. I decide on site, with samples in hand and a pencil on the wall. Here is how I think through these decisions, and what you can see in four rooms from one of my favorite recent projects.
Go All In: How I Designed a Sitting Room Around One Iconic Wallpaper
Some rooms start with a floor plan. Some start with a client's wish list. And some — the most fun ones — start with a wallpaper. This sitting room in Sleepy Hollow, New York started with Brunschwig and Fils Les Touches, and I committed to it completely.
