Project Spotlight: A Cool-Girl Retreat in the Heart of NYC
There’s something beautifully symbolic about redefining your home as you step into a new chapter of life. For this Manhattan empty nester, ready to embrace more color, charm, and personality, we transformed her Upper East Side apartment into a "cool-girl" retreat with edge and elegance.
Originally designed by Peter Pennoyer Architects, the apartment already had a solid foundation of traditional detailing—graceful moldings, a classic layout, and a working wood-burning fireplace that anchors the living space.
Our role was to layer in a sense of playful sophistication while respecting the architectural integrity of the space.
We embraced vibrant, statement-making design moments throughout, starting with a Schumacher tiger-print ottoman that adds just the right amount of boldness and glamour.
We anchored the space with durable performance fabrics—beautiful yet livable, so she could entertain effortlessly, enjoy everyday life without worry, and welcome grandkids without hesitation.
In the bedrooms and quieter spaces, we brought in whimsical wallpapers and custom window treatments that celebrate color and pattern, lending a youthful energy and layered texture.
Despite the fun and whimsy, we were intentional about preserving timelessness. Classic marble surfaces in the kitchen, clean-lined bathrooms, and thoughtful millwork reflect the refined sensibility of the original design.
The balance between old and new, subtle and bold, is what gives this project its lasting character.
The result? A warm, vibrant space that’s as ready for cocktails with girlfriends as it is for visits from children and grandchildren.
A home that feels both completely personal and completely New York.
