Guest Room, Details, Kids’ Room, Night Tables: A Few Favorite Moments from the Portfolio

I love when a home tells its story in the details—how a guest is welcomed, where a child curls up with a book, the way a night table quietly holds life’s little essentials.

Here are a few snapshots from recent projects and what makes each space work.

Kids’ Rooms that Grow Up Gracefully

Built-ins that do the heavy lifting.
In both kids’ spaces shown, the storage wall is the hero. Adjustable shelves flank the window to hold picture books now and trophies, chapter books, and keepsakes later. Closed cabinets and low cubbies corral board games, LEGOs, and devices so the floor can reset at the end of the day.

Window seats and Roman shades.
A cushioned radiator/bench under the window invites reading (or stuffed-animal meetups). Tailored Roman shades soften the light and add pattern: one room leans floral and classic; the other, a fresh zig-zag that energizes the study zone.

A real desk that actually gets used.
We tuck desks into the built-ins when possible—close to natural light and surrounded by storage. The setup makes it easy to clear surfaces and swap art supplies for keyboards as needs evolve.

Layered, kid-proof fabrics.
Slipcovers, performance textiles, and wipeable surfaces keep everything beautiful and low-stress. That’s the secret to a room that feels designed and lived in.

Guest Room: Quiet Luxury in the Details

Lighting that flatters.
A sculptural ceramic lamp brings warmth and a soft pool of light—perfect for evening reading. I aim for one ambient source and one task source in every guest room; the combination feels hotel-level without feeling fussy.

A chair that invites a pause.
A petite lounge chair turns a corner into a mini retreat—morning tea, phone calls, or simply a place to drop a bag. The upholstery is textured and neutral enough to play well with art, quilts, or patterned drapery.

Art + accent table = personality.
An interesting side table and a favorite print do more than fill space—they tell your story. I love the dialogue between vintage wood grain and crisp, graphic frames; it’s the balance that keeps a room from reading flat.

Night Tables: Small Surfaces, Big Impact

Night tables are workhorses. They need to be handsome and helpful:

  • Right height: top should sit roughly even with the mattress top (give or take an inch).

  • Surface area: space for a lamp, water, and a book (or two).

  • Storage: a drawer for chargers/eyewear and a shelf or closed cabinet for extras.

  • Power: hidden cord access or a small power hub keeps things civilized.

  • Pairs that play nicely: in guest rooms, I often mix; one with drawers, one with open shelves—same finish or siblings in the same color family.

Styling is simple: a small dish, a carafe, and a bud vase or frame. Done.

Design it your way (and make it last)

Start with function—built-ins to earn back floor space in kids’ rooms, good lighting and a real chair in the guest room, and night tables that meet your everyday needs. Then layer personality: a patterned Roman shade, a textured quilt, a sculptural lamp, and art that makes you smile.

If you’re in Westchester or NYC and ready to elevate your guest room design, kids’ room storage, or night table styling, I’d love to help.
